1. The Black Serpent Awakens
The last thing Kenji Tanaka remembered was the glare of his monitor, a spreadsheet blurring into a migraine, and the taste of cold convenience-store coffee. He had been pulling his third all-nighter in a row, debugging a legacy system that should have been retired a decade ago. His apartment was silent except for the hum of the computer. Then the hum stopped. The screen went black. A single line of green text flickered in the center:
Welcome, Player. Synchronizing soul… 3%… 47%… 100%. Enter the world of Aethelgard.
He didn't even have time to be confused. A sensation like being pulled inside-out gripped him, and the world dissolved into a tunnel of white light and screaming code.
When Kenji opened his eyes again, it wasn't to the flicker of fluorescent office lights. It was to a vaulted stone ceiling, painted with fading frescoes of winged figures locked in eternal combat. The air smelled of cold incense and old dust. He was lying on a hard slab, dressed in ornate, heavy black robes that felt like a costume. A strange, translucent blue screen hovered just in front of his face, filled with text he could somehow read.

[STATUS] Name: Darius Vancorp Title: The Black Serpent of the Ashen Court Infamy: 9,847,210 Active Bounties: 34
Kenji’s stomach dropped. He knew this name. Aethelgard was the notoriously difficult VRMMORPG his colleagues obsessed over, the one he was always too busy to play. And Darius Vancorp was its most infamous NPC villain. A traitor, a poisoner, a man who had personally orchestrated the tutorial-zone massacre in the game’s opening act. He was the character everyone in the player base unanimously, passionately hated. A character designed to be killed over and over again by heroes seeking glory.
A thunderous crash echoed from somewhere beyond the chamber’s heavy oak doors, followed by a chorus of angry, muffled shouts. "The Serpent's in the inner sanctum! Push! Push! Healer, keep the tank up!"
Kenji—no, Darius—scrambled off the stone slab, his new body feeling both foreign and frighteningly real. The weight of the robes, the chill of the air, the frantic pounding of his heart. This was no game. A second screen materialized, flashing red.
[SYSTEM ALERT] Raid in Progress: "The Fall of the Black Serpent" Participants: 40 Objective: Eliminate Darius Vancorp.
He looked around desperately. A dark, ornate staff crackling with purple energy leaned against the altar. A single, gilded mirror hung on the far wall. He stumbled towards it, and a stranger’s face stared back. It was his, yet not. The same tired eyes, but sharper, framed by longer, jet-black hair. His skin was paler, his expression naturally settling into a cold, aristocratic sneer he didn't feel. This was his face now. The face of a man about to be murdered by forty heavily-armed strangers for a loot drop.
The doors buckled inward, a spiderweb of cracks splintering the ancient wood. He had no combat skills, no knowledge of this world's magic, and only the dimmest recollection of the character's lore from overheard lunch conversations. His only assets were a villain's wardrobe, a reputation for unspeakable evil, and a rapidly closing window of survival. Kenji took a deep breath, the air tasting of ozone and desperation. If he was going to survive the first five minutes of his new life, he would have to play the role he was given.
